What makes Five Star Flag Football special?

A. Five Star Flag Football is the best summer sports program in New England.  Our strong affiliation with NFL Flag assures that our program provides the summer experience of a lifetime.  Each child receives an official NFL Flag football jersey and flag.  We have the best facilities in New England.  Our program is hosted on Gordan Field at Brandeis University.  The synthetic field is state-of-the-art and is similar to the fields played on by your child’s favorite NFL player.  In the event of unfavorable weather conditions, we are able to run the program inside the beautiful Gosman Athletic Center.  Most summer programs are unable to provide attendees with a rainout facility, and no one has a facility as nice as Five Star’s.  Our staff is comprised of experienced coaches, former professional, All-American, and standout high school athletes.  The program utilizes teaching and coaching techniques developed to improve skills and knowledge of the game.

What do children get out of attending Five Star?

A. Children will learn the proper fundamentals of the game.  They will develop a greater understanding of how to become a better teammate and player.  This will lead to athletes having increased self-confidence and competitiveness.  Children learn by practicing specifically designed drills in a fun and instructive flag football environment.  We will improve skills in the areas of passing, catching, kicking, speed, and agility.

Who attends Five Star? Is Five Star Flag Football co-ed?

A. Our program provides first class flag football instruction to both boys and girls aged 6-14 who enjoy playing flag football, are interested in learning the game, and want to get better on a local team. Our coaches are experienced in teaching all age groups and skill levels.

What is included in the registration fee?

A. Each child will receive an official NFL flag jersey with a real NFL team logo.  In addition, attendees will receive a flag which they will keep.  The fee also includes use of the state-of-the- art facilities at Brandeis University.

What do kids need to bring each day?

A. Your child will need proper athletic shoes and exercise apparel.  Shorts and t-shirts are appropriate.  It is a good idea to pack your child an extra change of clothes.  You will need to provide your child with a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle.  Unfortunately, we are unable to provide refrigerators, so we ask that you pack accordingly. One of the most important things that we ask your child to bring is an open mind and a willingness to learn.  We want our attendees to be enthusiastic about attending our program!

Is Five Star Flag Football an overnight program?

A. No, Five Star Flag Football are day programs which run from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Do all age groups play together?

A. Children are separated into different groups by age and skill level.  It is possible that sometimes there will be competitions or drills in which older kids are playing with younger kids.

Will children receive individual time with the coaches?

A. Our program is unique in that we set time aside to evaluate and help develop the skills of our athletes.  Children will receive feedback from coaches during drills, games, and contests.  Our coaching staff is able to improve certain areas of the game for each individual.

What is the benefit in returning for multiple sessions?

A. Children will benefit tremendously by attending additional weeks. When children return for additional sessions they will better master the lessons taught from the previous sessions. You can never practice enough when you are at a young age. Attending additional sessions allows students to get extra repetitions of skills and techniques that were taught.

What qualifications and experience do Five Star Flag Football coaches and counselors have?

A. Our staff members of coaches and counselors have years of experience running summer programs and working with kids.  We are made up of college coaches, athletic directors, current and former high school and college athletes.  We are passionate about inspiring kids to be the best they can be.  For more information, please read the Partners page under the “About” tab of Five Star Flag Football.

Does Five Star Flag Football utilize the same drills during each week?

A. Yes. The fundamental drills remain the same for all skill levels. As players progress in abilities, they are given higher-level drills to practice and work on.

Can my child miss a day or half-day? Will this cause them to fall behind?

A. It is not uncommon for kids to occasionally miss a day or have to leave early or arrive late on some days due to various reasons. We realize that family schedules require flexibility. If they miss instructions for a new drill, we will ensure that they receive time with a counselor to bring them back up to speed.

What if my child is six or seven years old? Is Five Star Flag Football too intense or difficult for younger age groups?

A. We are confident that all children will be able to compete and have fun.  It is possible that your child could be put to the test during certain drills, as sports programs are a lot of work. Our staff members are highly trained coaches and counselors who coach all age groups. Five Star Flag Football staff will not push younger children as hard as the older kids. At times some children move up with the older kids, however, most children will stay with their age group.

My child is in high school. Is he/she too old for this program?

A. Many 14 year olds are already in high school.  We invite anyone aged 6-14 to our program.  However, most children are in grades 1 through 8.  Our program is a great place to prepare for playing flag football in youth leagues and on club teams.

How does Five Star view competition?

A. Competition at Five Star should be viewed in its proper perspective. The word “competition” often conjures in people’s minds images which are in reality the defects of competition. Properly structured, athletic competition provides an opportunity for children to challenge themselves, use the skills that they are developing, and cultivate proper attitudes and good sportsmanship. These benefits are best attained when the playing ability of the child is compatible and when the leadership is sensitive to the potential for enhancing personal development through competition. There are no awards given. There are no honor rolls. We strive to help kids develop self-esteem. To select only a few for awards would defeat what we are trying to accomplish.
During the summer, kids will have the opportunity to participate in athletic competitions and tournaments with neighboring programs. While we are competitive, our win/loss record is not the determining factor in judging the success of our summer. We play to win, but consider the game a success if we have played our best, been good sports and have had a great time.

Will my child be safe at Five Star?

A. Your child’s safety is our main concern. Our partners have over 50 years of collective experience running high quality summer sports programs. We have never had a child who has been seriously injured or hurt. We take pride in knowing that our operations and systems in place work to keep your child safe at all times.

Five Star Flag Football has strict rules. Here are a few examples:

  • Children are not allowed to leave the field without a coach or staff member.  If a child needs to use the restroom or visit the concession stand, they are required to notify their counselor and use the “buddy system”.   Under no circumstances are children allowed to leave the Gordon Field of the Gosman Athletic Center unless there is written permission from parents or guardians and it is coordinated with our staff ahead of time.
  • Children who need to use the restroom must go with another child as a “buddy”, and they must inform a staff member.
  • We make sure that two counselors are present whenever there are personal issues with a child.
